Amity committee to buy Traversa routing software for about $24,000 to model start-time options

The Amity Board of Education ad hoc school start committee voted to proceed with purchasing routing software to give staff the ability to analyze route efficiency and model different school start-time scenarios.
Staff recommended buying Tyler Technologies' Traversa product and said Amity would cover an initial implementation cost of about $24,000 that the board had already budgeted. “We would propose that AMD board of ed would cover the initial cost of implementing the software. It's about $24,000,” Jen said.
The software will be loaded and operated by Mr. Sorenson, who builds the bus routes for the districts; owner-operators and the elementary districts agreed to provide routing and ridership data so the system can produce accurate scenarios. Staff said Traversa can collect usage patterns over several months (staff recommended about six months for a robust dataset) and then run “what-if” simulations such as an 8:00 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. high school start to show downstream effects on bus counts, early-dismissal impacts for athletics and labor needs.
Committee members noted there is no need for an immediate additional appropriation because the $24,000 was in the current budget; staff estimated annual licensing/maintenance would be in the range of $9,000. The plan is to acquire the software, have Mr. Sorenson load data in the next school year and reconvene after sufficient data collection to produce modeled alternatives and more precise cost projections.
The committee emphasized that purchasing the software is a planning step and not a commitment to change start times. The next step is for staff to prepare a short summary for the full board and to return with scenario results for deliberation.
