District signs leases for transition program sites; building committee applicant interviews set

The Portland School District reported that leases for two sites — Saybrook Reading and a Main Street location near the police department — have been signed to support an upcoming transition program. The superintendent said the Main Street site is on a bus line and well placed for program access.

Board members also reported that the grant applications associated with related building projects were submitted before the June 30 deadline, with consultant support, and that a paper screening of building committee applicants produced a pool of qualified candidates. Interviews are scheduled for Monday and the superintendent expects to forward committee recommendations to the Board of Selectmen early next week. By state statute, two people must be on the building committee: one with construction experience and the Board of Education chair (or their designee).
Board member Dave was thanked for agreeing to serve as the district’s designee on the committee; the board clarified the Board of Selectmen will make final appointments. Members said the building committee will require a significant time commitment from participants.
The district will continue recruiting students and planning site preparation over the summer; recommendations on committee appointments will be forwarded to the Board of Selectmen for formal appointment.
