Consultants (CSG and GWWO) are preparing revised cost estimates and community presentations. The board was told escalation costs will increase if the referendum is postponed a year, but delaying was preferred to gather state-level policy clarity after the 2026 legislative short session. "We would have all the financial information as far as what was affordable and doable in time to submit the grant application that would then go to referendum," a presenter said.
Consultants also presented scenarios showing that if higher reimbursement or a space waiver is not granted, the district may not be able to fund both the middle/high-school project and elementary work. Board members repeatedly returned to the recommendation that, if only one project can proceed, the middle/high school should be the priority. Meeting notes recorded a prior consensus: "If only one project could proceed, the middle high school would be the prioritized." The board discussed roof replacements, swing-space implications, and the need for clearer cost estimates from GWWO.
Board members and staff said they would meet with local legislators and seek clearer numbers from the town (bonding capacity) to present realistic scenarios to the public; consultants will prepare a community forum presentation once the data are updated. The board agreed to place a renovation vote on an upcoming meeting agenda (Aug. 27) for potential formal action once legislative and ad hoc committee work provides more details.
No formal referendum decision was taken at the meeting; members asked staff to return with updated numbers and recommended bringing the item back for a vote after the district’s meetings with legislators and another ad hoc session.
