Toms River facilities report: auditorium heaters ordered, field lights out and gym floor slated for capital fix

At the buildings and grounds portion of the board meeting, district facilities staff outlined a series of maintenance and capital issues that will factor into upcoming budgets and scheduling.
Mr. Sitter and facilities manager Mr. Madigan said three heaters above the High School North auditorium have required replacement; two units failed and replacement heaters have been ordered at roughly $30,000 apiece with a 12–14 week lead time. Officials said the district is identifying temporary heating options and could relocate events to other facilities if a replacement is delayed.
Facilities staff also reported 469 November work requests with about 451 completed, the majority tied to HVAC issues after seasonal temperature changes. Staff praised the maintenance crew’s responsiveness and noted that most classroom work has not required displacement.
Grounds crews completed relocation of a playground at North Dover Elementary; one remaining pavilion will be evaluated for spring work. The district said the JBAC project is open and functioning and that they incurred modest rental costs during final delays but completed the job on time and on budget.
On field lighting, staff described a meter-installation problem with the Beachwood soccer field: the utility company initially installed the meter in the wrong location, delaying final work; currently 16 of 24 lights are out and staff will determine whether bulbs or ballasts are at fault while coordinating with Beachwood Township.
Board members and central administration noted a grant opportunity (Saltbridge Farm) being reviewed by the science and food-services departments to support gardens and locally sourced produce for school kitchens. Officials also reported ongoing planning needs for larger capital items: the Walnut Street gym floor has buckled from moisture and will require a full replacement, a project recommended for the next fiscal budget cycle and summer construction window.
The board opened the public-comment period under policy 0167 but recorded no members of the public or press speaking.
