District unveils Future Teacher Academy and AP Spanish pathway for high schools

Adrien Gold presented a proposal to launch a Future Teacher Academy across the district’s three high schools to recruit and develop students into education careers and help address local staffing needs.
Gold said the academy would offer early classroom observation beginning freshman year, a structured three-course pathway (examples discussed: psychology of the learner; introduction to education of exceptional students; a teacher-prep course), dual-enrollment opportunities, and a senior-year practicum that places students in internships and mentors them through lesson planning and classroom practice. The initiative is designed to give students transferable college credits and real classroom experience so graduates can pursue teacher preparation programs and return to serve in the district.
Gold described implementation steps still in development—course sequencing, curriculum alignment for dual enrollment/CTE, budget planning, and community and higher-education partnerships—and said the program could pilot next year if demand and budget allow. Board members supported piloting in one building or offering club-based freshman-year exposure at all three schools to assess interest before scaling.
On languages, Gold told the board the district administered the Seal of Biliteracy test this month to more than 180 students across three high schools and aims to offer AP Spanish in all three high schools next year. The proposed pathway would add an advanced honors Spanish III to prepare students for the AP course and create options for heritage speakers to reach AP-level study.
Next steps: curriculum staff will refine course proposals, evaluate dual-enrollment options and Perkins funding eligibility, and report back to the board with cost estimates and a recommended pilot plan.
