Pablo, a council member, explained the rationale for postponement: “If we are being asked to donate $70,000 we need to start getting a little bit more data on who is actually using the senior center and how many residents from other communities are visiting.” Councilors asked for the breakdown of city residents versus users from other townships, comparisons to neighboring municipal contributions, and historical usage figures.
Justin (City Manager) noted the senior center director had been out of town and said the center’s leader would be invited to present at the July 13 meeting. Several council members referenced the county millage and prior reports that historically provided user counts; councilors wanted those reports placed on the record with any new funding.
Motion and next steps: Popoff moved to postpone the funding decision to July 13 so staff and the senior center director could supply the requested usage and contribution data; the motion carried 4–3. Council directed staff to send specific questions to the center so the director could prepare a full report.
Outcome: The council will revisit the funding request at the July 13 meeting armed with resident-vs.-nonresident usage figures and comparative township contribution data.
