High-school energy study: quick operational fixes could save $40,000 annually; full electrification costs vary by approach

At its May 21 meeting, the Climate Action Planning Committee reviewed findings from a comprehensive energy assessment of the Milton High School. Municipal Energy Manager Kai Mueller summarized both operational and capital measures identified in the study.
Short-term operational changes already implemented by Facilities — chiefly recalibration of heating schedules and ventilation settings that had remained elevated since the COVID period — are projected to save approximately $40,000 annually, roughly 2.5% of the town’s FY2025 energy spend (Mueller said the town spent about $1.9 million on energy in FY2025).
For major electrification measures the assessment provided high-level cost estimates: ground-source heat pumps at about $50 million, air-source heat pumps around $20 million, and air-to-water heat-pump systems near $25 million. Chair Hasha and J. Hale Smith cautioned against presenting the $50 million ground-source figure without context; Hale Smith noted federal tax credits could reduce that cost by about 30%, and Hasha noted a recently approved net-metering credit contract is expected to reduce electricity costs for much of the town’s load by roughly 15%.
The High School figures are planning-level estimates; committee members emphasized the need for project-level design and funding analysis before committing to major retrofits. The committee’s discussion fed into the broader Municipal Decarbonization Roadmap conversation and the town’s impending Climate Leader Communities application.
