Brooklyn Board of Education moves 2026–27 student start to Aug. 31 to avoid town fair

The Brooklyn Board of Education voted unanimously on May 4, 2026, to move the 2026–2027 student start date to Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, after Superintendent Raynor reported that the previously approved Aug. 26 start conflicted with the Brooklyn Fair, which begins Aug. 27.
Superintendent Raynor told the board that a resident raised concerns about students missing fair activities and about potential traffic and school-bus logistics. She said local groups that rely on student participation for fundraising, including the Boy Scouts, would be affected by the conflict.
To address those concerns, Superintendent Raynor proposed moving two scheduled staff days from Aug. 24–25 to Aug. 26 and Aug. 27. "August 26 would be used for convocation and professional learning, and August 27 would be a full professional development day," Raynor said. That change allows students to begin on Aug. 31 while keeping June 15, 2027, as the projected last day of school and preserving days for potential weather-related closures.
Dr. Melissa Perkins-Banas, vice chair, moved to approve the calendar adjustment, and Secretary Justin Phaiah seconded the motion. The board voted 5–0 to approve the change.
The board recorded no public comments during the meeting. Superintendent Raynor said the district will share information about the adjusted calendar with families and the community promptly.
The meeting adjourned at 6:23 p.m. following a unanimous motion from Secretary Phaiah, seconded by Deb Metzger.
