Board approves Spring 2026 varsity baseball trip, hires paraprofessional and accepts coach resignation

The Carson City-Crystal Area Schools board of education approved several personnel and student-activity items at its Dec. 8 meeting, including a Spring 2026 varsity baseball trip, the hiring of a special education paraprofessional and the acceptance of a coach’s resignation.
B. Meilleur presented the baseball trip request, explaining that an early-spring week in Topsoil, N.C., would allow the varsity team to begin practices and transport players and equipment to the field daily. The presenter asked to use two vans instead of one to accommodate players and gear. AD/Principal Farnham confirmed two vans would not be an issue.
On the action agenda the board voted 6–0 to approve the trip and the use of two vans; the motion was made by R. Lankford and supported by M. Barker. The consent agenda — moved by M. Staff and supported by R. Lankford — included approval of minutes, the district financials for November/December 2025, the hiring of Gabriel Arrieta as a Special Education Paraprofessional at the high school (Superintendent Sattler recommended and concurred), and acceptance of Grant Woodman’s resignation from Boys 6–12 Cross Country and Varsity Boys Track.
During the round-table discussion, board member M. Barker expressed concern about the resignation and asked whether the district could take steps to retain coaches; R. Lankford agreed and suggested investigating why coaches are leaving to improve continuity for student-athletes.
The meeting concluded with unanimous votes to accept the consent agenda, approve the baseball trip and adjourn at 6:55 p.m.
