Board hears bond update, compliance and instructional planning notes; Pupil Count Day set for Oct. 1
Summary
District staff reported the Stalker Head Start demolition is complete and high school parking lot renovations are projected for next spring; administrators described committee, special education and instructional planning details, and the superintendent noted upcoming events and travel to the MASA conference.
At the Sept. 16 meeting, Carman-Ainsworth district staff updated the Board of Education on bond projects and several operational matters.
Russ Parks reported demolition of the Stalker Head Start building is complete and said high school parking lot renovations are projected to start next spring. Detra Fields said the Promoting Positive School Climate (PPSC) committee dates are finalized and that the district is adjusting committee structures to meet new, more stringent requirements so students understand both the R.O.C.K.S. expectations and their meaning. Bob Hetherton said the Special Education Department is reviewing extensive data to support appropriate student placements.
Adrienne Nathan invited board members to an elementary coaches’ data day on Friday, Sept. 19, 2025, where coaches will analyze data and develop instructional strategies. Mr. Parks reminded the board that Pupil Count Day is Oct. 1. Superintendent Ryan commended the Links Crew at Carman-Ainsworth High School for engaging freshmen and promoting school spirit at a freshman tailgate and reminded members that the National Honor Society induction ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 17. She also noted she will be out of the office Sept. 17–19 to attend the Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators (MASA) Fall Conference.
Trustees reported community engagement activities: Gary Cousins highlighted the high school football team’s effort; Mary Margaret Gleason-Gidcumb and La Cracha Handy said they attended middle and high school open houses; Handy encouraged members to contact state legislators about the state budget. President Gloria Nealy noted she attended a Title I meeting, which had low attendance but was informative.
Ending: The board set future meetings, including a Student Discipline Subcommittee on Sept. 23, 2025, and regular meetings on Oct. 7 and Oct. 21, 2025.
