Board recognizes student as co-valedictorian after split vote

The Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Board of Education voted June 30 to recognize Katie Pryor as a co-valedictorian for the class of 2026 and to reissue her diploma with the valedictorian label and send a district email announcing the recognition. A board member introduced the motion and Missus Anderson seconded it.

Board members debated whether the request should be honored retroactively or referred to the administration and legal counsel for further review. One board member emphasized compassion for the student, saying the student "made her case" and that the evidence of straight-A performance was compelling (Board member (speaker 5)). Other board members warned that retroactive changes to longstanding handbook language and prior administrative decisions required caution and, potentially, legal review (Chair (speaker 3); Superintendent (speaker 2)).

Doctor Pryor declared a conflict of interest and abstained from the vote. When the roll was called the result was two yeses, one no and one abstention; the board chair announced the motion passed. Under the motion the district will reissue the student’s diploma labeled “valedictorian” and release an email notice to the community recognizing Katie Pryor as co-valedictorian.

The board’s action resolved the immediate request but prompted broader discussion about the district’s policies for determining valedictorian and salutatorian; separate agenda items later in the meeting addressed handbook wording to reduce ambiguity.
