San Lake board accepts Veterans Affairs 2023 report; office reports 545 rides and emergency relief payments

Shannon, the county's veterans affairs presenter, summarized key metrics: fiscal-year payments to county veterans for compensation, pension, readjustment and related benefits totaled $16,988; the office provided 545 rides to veterans for medical appointments in 2023 and operates three vehicles to support transportation; and the Veterans Relief Fund approved $8,616 in emergency assistance for veterans for needs such as food, mortgage and vehicle insurance.
Commissioners credited outreach and an engaged director for part of the increase in benefits paid, noting that better information and claims assistance have brought benefits to more eligible veterans. Shannon said the office recently expanded eligibility to community-care appointments approved by the VA in addition to VA medical center visits.
The board accepted the report by motion with no further discussion and expressed appreciation for the services and the ongoing renovation of the veterans services office building.
No budget vote or additional funding was adopted at the meeting; commissioners noted transportation demand and vehicle fleet needs as items to track going forward.
