The Boyne City Board of Education on Dec. 8, 2025 unanimously approved three principal administrative recommendations: awarding a civil work contract for the high school athletic project, purchasing a new gasoline-powered school bus equipped with a wheelchair lift, and adopting new literacy materials for grades 4 through 6.
Board President Zareena Koch called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. in the Boyne City Education Center Hospitality Room. The board approved its consent agenda by roll call (motion by Sara Ward; seconded by Jill Towne-Patton) and then addressed business and finance items before taking action on administrative recommendations.
On procurement, the board voted to award the civil work bid for the high school athletic project to Team Elmers for $534,696, as recommended by administration. The motion was made by Mary Towne, seconded by Sara Ward, and carried by a 7–0 roll call vote.
On transportation, the board authorized purchase of a new gasoline school bus equipped with a wheelchair service lift from Holland for $138,946. That motion was made by Mary Towne, seconded by Jill Towne-Patton, and approved 7–0. The superintendent’s earlier capital improvement update noted the district had already purchased a bus with a wheelchair lift as part of ongoing fleet and accessibility planning.
On instruction, the board adopted a new literacy program package recommended by district staff: HMH for 5th and 6th grades and Bookworms for 4th grade. The curriculum adoption carries an administrative cost estimate of $74,000. The motion to adopt was moved by Jill Towne-Patton, seconded by Riley Cope, and passed unanimously (7–0). Chrystal Dean, introduced as the district’s literacy coach, outlined the new literacy framework; Kyle Maginity presented details about the HMH and Bookworms materials during the presentations portion of the meeting.
The board also approved payment of monthly bills totaling $336,540.39 (General Fund $261,840.80; Food Service Fund $41,632.64; Bond Fund $33,067.05) and approved minutes of prior meetings (Nov. 10 and Dec. 1, 2025).
