Bloomingdale joins township policing addendum; deputy gains authority to enforce village ordinances

The Village Council on April 21 approved an addendum to an existing agreement (April 14, 2026) that extends the Township patrol deputy’s duties and authority to enforce Village ordinances within the Village of Bloomingdale.
Under the addendum, patrol deputies provided by Van Buren County through the Township will also have authority to enforce Village ordinances in addition to township ordinances and state law. The Township will bill the Village for any deputy time spent investigating or citing Village ordinance violations and for time spent on court appearances or other duties beyond routine enforcement. The terms reference the April 14, 2025 agreement for additional billing details.
Council approved the addendum on a motion by T. Dickerson, supported by T. Fisher; the motion carried by roll call. The signed addendum included signatures from Daniel E. Abbott, Van Buren County Sheriff; Matthew Ashbrook, Bloomingdale Township Supervisor; and Justin Crawford, President of the Village of Bloomingdale.
Council discussion emphasized that the arrangement extends local enforcement capacity while assigning costs for Village‑specific enforcement duties to the Village. The addendum may be terminated by any party under the terms described in section 8 of the original agreement.
