City council approves application for small public-safety camera grant

City staff said the city will apply for a Michigan Township Participating Plan grant to add security cameras at the police building and recommended adopting Resolution 24-9-9 to authorize the application. The staff presentation said the MTPP program has funded cameras and traffic-control equipment for the city before and that ASI Security was the lowest vendor staff felt comfortable recommending.
"The grant will only cover up to $2,500," City staff said, and staff added that the city must provide a local match to proceed. Staff told the council there is roughly $34,600 available in the general-fund building line-item to cover the required local share if the project moves forward.
Council members asked about vendor quotes and camera capacity. Staff said the original quote covered up to 12 cameras and staff requested an updated bid that would allow future expansion to more cameras should City Hall and the police building be combined in the future. One council member noted prior MTPP-funded projects, including parking-lot and City Hall cameras, as precedents for this application.
A council member moved to adopt Resolution 24-9-9 and the motion was seconded. The motion was approved on a voice vote; no roll-call tally was read into the meeting record.
