Bloomingdale council approves $150,000 for North Van Buren restriping, OKs MDOT invoice in 6–1 vote and routine expenditures

The Bloomingdale Village Council on Feb. 17 approved a series of budget and vendor items, fronted by a $150,000 amendment to the Major Streets Fund to complete and restripe North Van Buren Street.
The budget amendment to add $150,000 to the Major Streets Fund passed on a motion by T. Dickerson, supported by T. Fisher. Council discussion also touched on trustee salaries, which were budgeted for possible future adjustment but not changed at the meeting.
Separately, the council approved an MDOT North Van Buren project invoice for $31,297.31. The motion to pay the MDOT invoice was made by J. Crawford, supported by G. Simpson, and passed on a recorded roll call of 6 Yes, 1 No. The minutes do not identify which member voted No.
Council approved several routine fiscal items and vendor payments on individual motions, including a $3,500 bill from Southwestern Michigan Dust Control for brine application; a $3,950 fee related to the Van Buren County Rural Task Force application and documentation; and a $1,031.03 special assessment from the Van Buren County Drain Commission. J. Crawford moved to approve the MML pool renewal premium of $13,233.00; that motion was carried. Specific roll-call tallies for those motions are recorded only as "Roll—Yes" in the minutes.
The council also approved a $150 donation to support the annual Easter Egg Hunt after a public comment from Sandy Merchant, who identified the request as coming from the Bloomingdale Development Association (BDA). The motion was recorded as moved by T. Rankin and supported by T. Dickerson; the motion carried.
On parks work, the council authorized a $700 EGLE-required soil test for the Depot rehabilitation project to determine any contamination and regulatory obligations and directed staff to prepare bid specifications for plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting and exterior repairs. That motion passed on a motion by T. Rakin, supported by J. Crawford.
The President’s monthly report noted increased pumping to lower pond levels following rain and snowmelt; treatment of excess inflow will begin once levels have been reduced. Council approved changing the keys to the Clerk/Treasurer’s office to better control access (motion by J. Crawford, supported by B. Strong).
A final public comment came from Township Supervisor Matthew Ashbrook, who invited the board to attend the township meeting on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The meeting adjourned at 7:41 p.m.
