Sheriff candidate Mike urges evidence preservation, staffing and honesty in public comment

During the public-comment period at the Bronson City Council meeting, Mike — who identified himself as a candidate for sheriff — addressed the council and outlined a set of campaign priorities focused on public safety and jail operations.

Mike asked the city to support officers with equipment and records retention systems to ensure evidence is preserved for serious crimes including domestic violence and homicides. He said those systems are expensive but necessary for long-term case handling and appeals.

On jail operations, Mike suggested the county jail — which he said has a capacity of about 250 and historically holds fewer inmates — could house inmates from neighboring counties to generate revenue. He described a hypothetical example in which boarding inmates at a daily per-inmate rate could produce meaningful daily income for the county. He framed this as an operational and revenue option rather than a call to increase arrests.

Mike also raised staffing and compensation concerns, noting the county’s rural setting and difficulty retaining staff and officers, and urged improvements in benefits to help with recruitment and retention. He closed by stressing the role of character: "The most important thing is honesty and integrity," Mike said, arguing those qualities are essential for officers to earn public trust.

The public-comment period contained no formal response from council on policy changes; Mike’s remarks were presented as his positions while campaigning.
