Staffer Don told the Boyne City Commission he found multiple regional records tied to the name Christopher Brown and that at least one judgment and a state lien matched the applicant’s date of birth and social security number.
"I confirmed that the state of Michigan filed a lien against Christopher Brown that has the same social security number as the applicant," Don said in his briefing. He explained the search used local records and TransUnion data and noted many entries dated from about 1998–2015; some judgments had later satisfactions in 2016–2017.
Commissioners reacted with differing interpretations. Some said the records are old and, where satisfied, carry limited bearing on present fitness; others said the candidate’s unwillingness to 'own' earlier financial problems in the interview raised concerns about candor and integrity. Several commissioners said they could accept older, satisfied judgments; others said a lack of upfront disclosure undermined trust.
The commission instructed the attorney to prioritize negotiating terms with the leading candidate and to run a nationwide/in‑depth background check only if the candidate accepts those terms. Commissioners emphasized the need to distinguish between business vs. personal judgments and asked staff to clarify that distinction in follow‑up reporting.
Commissioners did not make a hiring decision at the meeting; they plan to review negotiation outcomes and complete fuller background screening before any final vote.
