Boyne City commissioners voted Tuesday to hire Pivot to conduct the city manager executive search and instructed staff to arrange additional interviews for interim candidates after questions emerged in background checks.
Under agenda item 8B the commission compared proposals from several recruitment firms, including the Michigan Municipal League and Pivot. Commissioners said Pivot’s eight‑week timeline and customizable search approach appealed to the majority; Commissioner Pritchard noted Pivot’s $11,200 bid and recommended a not‑to‑exceed authorization of $15,000 to cover advertising, background checks and travel. The motion to select Pivot carried on roll call.
On the related topic of hiring an interim city manager (agenda item 8A), commissioners reviewed background‑check updates performed by City Clerk Treasurer Jessica Pearl. The commission discussed three previously interviewed candidates and a newly submitted application from Chelsea Kerr; some commissioners expressed concerns about financial issues disclosed in a candidate’s background and recommended an additional interview to allow the candidate to explain those items.
“I would encourage us to invite Chris Brown back next week to further explore that background,” Commissioner Moody said, referencing questions that arose in a credit/financial check. Several commissioners favored convening a special meeting next week to interview the new and previously interviewed candidates rather than appointing someone immediately.
The commission asked staff to contact potential candidates, collect resumes and salary requirements and to schedule interviews during a special meeting window (draft availability discussed: May 20–23, with tentative times noted). Commissioners emphasized the 90‑day statutory timeframe to appoint an interim manager and asked staff to confirm the triggering start date with the city attorney.
What’s next: City administration will solicit required application materials from additional candidates, confirm availability for interviews and bring background‑check materials and candidate interviews to a special meeting so the commission can either appoint an interim or continue to vet candidates. Pivot will be engaged to begin the permanent recruitment process under the authorized budget.
