Public Works Superintendent Matt Conner reported to the Board on Oct. 15 that crews discovered 13 water-service lines leaking below grade on empty lots in Prairie Crossings South. The leaks were draining directly into a golf course pond and previously went undetected, Conner said.
Conner told trustees that crews have already shut off 30 service lines across newer subdivisions, including Nantucket Cove and Hunters Chase East, because numerous additional empty-lot services may be leaking. He said the shut-offs are an immediate response to stop active leaks; a future program will be needed to replace the services and address the systemic loss reflected in the pumped-to-billed ratio.
Why this matters: Persistent unmetered leakage can materially affect the village’s water accounting and treatment costs, and may require capital work to replace buried services on vacant lots. Public Works is currently focusing on isolating active leaks and preventing further loss while staff scope replacement needs and costs.
The Board took no formal vote on replacement plans at the meeting; Conner said staff will determine how to proceed with replacements and repairs in the future.
