District launches peer-mediation program with training in September

Benton Harbor Area Schools will roll out a peer-mediation program called Peers Making Peace with training scheduled in September. Miss Nichols outlined implementation dates and leads: Mr. Burton will be lead coordinator at the high school and Mr. Jones at the middle school; Mr. McAfee and Miss Goodson will be support trainers. The program vendor (Oakland Mediation Center) will deliver train-the-trainer sessions on September 4–6, followed by a two-hour workshop covering intake procedures, referral forms, and how mediations will be processed.
Miss Nichols said the district purchased the highest available package from the vendor to train staff and students; she will provide details about maximum student capacity for mediation roles. Trustee Gavin noted strong student interest (50+ sign-ups earlier) and asked whether parent training or broader community trainer options could be added; Miss Nichols said the package purchased covers staff and student training, with options to expand under separate arrangements.
Trustees supported moving Student Support Services reporting earlier on future agendas to ensure adequate attention for program updates. Implementation will include a schedule of training dates and operational paperwork for referrals and intake to be shared with the board.
