Rothbury council adopts officials' compensation ordinance, appoints Juan Cano to vacant seat

The ordinance was read aloud by President Mike Harris and adopted after a motion by Councilmember Denise Kurdziel, seconded by Jim Fekken; the vote was recorded as 6 ayes and 0 nays. Council later moved, on a motion by Kurdziel supported by Troy Voorhees, to pay the village’s bills; that motion also passed 6–0.
Clerk Brandy Williams read letters of interest from two residents, Marianne Canales and Juan Cano, who each spoke and answered council questions as candidates for the open seat. After discussion, Kurdziel moved to appoint Cano, Fekken seconded, and the council approved the appointment by a 4–2 vote. The transcript records that Juan Cano was appointed to the vacant council seat.
Other operational and administrative items included a report from Village Director of Operations Scott Beishuizen that bids for the Czarny Park project will be solicited in about one week to 10 days and that the council reached consensus to postpone chip-and-seal work on Michigan Avenue until the next fiscal year. Beishuizen also said the village has located an out-of-area zoning enforcer willing to contract with Rothbury; Troy Voorhees will assume the Zoning Administrator role so President Mike Harris does not hold incompatible offices. The council asked staff to gather pricing to repair dugouts at the ballfield.
Treasurer Deb Murphy reported the fiscal-year millage rate of 4.9309 will stand and stated no additional notification or hearing is required for that rate. The meeting adjourned at 7:45 PM.
