Roseville board approves bond language for May 5 ballot, unanimously OKs routine hires and purchases

The Roseville Community Schools Board of Education on Jan. 26 voted unanimously to approve the wording of a school improvement bond proposal and to submit the measure to voters on the May 5, 2026 election.
The resolution to place the bond on the ballot was moved by Secretary Joseph D. DeFelice and supported by Trustee Michelle Williams-Ward; trustees Theresa Genest, Kevin Switanowski, Matthew McCartney and Gina Aiuto joined DeFelice, Williams-Ward and Vice President Switanowski in a roll-call vote that carried 6-0.
Why it matters: If approved by voters, the bond would fund identified school-improvement needs (the resolution’s project list and dollar amounts were approved for submission to the electorate). The board took the procedural step of approving ballot language and filing the resolution; any final authorization depends on the election outcome.
The meeting also cleared a slate of routine but material items. The board accepted personnel recommendations that included multiple new hires, reclassifications and resignations; approved a Roseville High School Science & Adventure Club trip to the Inland Seas Education Association in Traverse City (May 7–9, 2026); and approved two sets of policy updates (August 2025 and October 2025) on second reading. Motions on those items passed unanimously.
On capital and maintenance spending, the board approved a $23,610 purchase of sanding tables for the Roseville High School wood shop from JKL Machinery to be paid using bond funds. It also approved purchase of Elkay Water Sentry replacement filters for $57,373.96 using Filter First grant funds through Omnia Contract #R211402. The board authorized staff to solicit bids for a dust collector for the high school wood shop.
Community use and scheduling items: The board granted the Roseville Optimist Club permission to use the Steenland Elementary cafeteria for a Youth Respect for Law ceremony on May 26, 2026, and postponed School Board Recognition to Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, because of weather-related school closures.
Board remarks and next steps: Vice President Kevin Switanowski opened the meeting’s informal remarks with, “Stay warm; thoughts to RPD.” Superintendent Mark Blaszkowski noted schools would be open Tuesday and said Jan. 27 would be a half day for records, and he acknowledged Scott Sikorski during later comments. The board listed several upcoming meetings, including a special Student School Board meeting on Feb. 9 and the rescheduled recognition on Feb. 23.
