Rothbury council approves summer lunch program, retitles DPW director and accepts retirement announcement from president

The Rothbury Village Council on April 21 approved a summer lunch program, agreed to retitle the DPW Director position and heard administrative reports before adjourning at 7:36 p.m.
The council voted 5-0 to allow Montague Schools to run a Summer Lunch Program at the Village Hall on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon, June 9 through Aug. 18. Council member Denise Kurdziel made the motion to approve; Autum Drake seconded. The vote was recorded as five ayes and zero nays.
The decision to retitle the public works director was presented as an administrative alternative to adopting a Village Manager form of government. Village Attorney Brennan Gorman outlined the two options and council directed staff to change the DPW Director title to Village Director of Operations and produce a clear job description detailing duties and expectations. DPW Director Scott Beishuizen provided updates on several public-works and park items, including a concept layout for Czarny Park with bids planned for June, replacement of a sign at Winston and 88th, ordering a new light post for Michigan Avenue, and completion of a park pavilion. The council also approved approximately $5,000 for new dirt for the ballfield.
Treasurer Deb Murphy reported that the village’s new Westshore Bank checking account is now open. Police Chief Ethan Walker gave a brief police report, and Planning Commission Chair Mike Harris said the Planning Commission did not meet this month. Zoning Administrator Mike Harris said several zoning complaints remain under review; some have been resolved.
Recreation Director Brandy Williams said the village’s Easter Egg Hunt was moved indoors because of weather, that bike drawings were held for each age group, and that all but one prize was collected the following Sunday at the Whitehall Walmart. RCC Director Deb Murphy said the Community Center is fully booked in June and July and that staff are collecting quotes and scheduling walkthroughs for a ceiling project.
President Vern Talmadge told the council he is retiring effective March 31 and that April 21 would be his last meeting; council members congratulated him. Mike Harris will serve as president pro tem at the next meeting. The council also approved payment of the bills in a 5-0 vote; the motion was made by Mike Harris and seconded by Autum Drake.
The council scheduled follow-up on an ordinance concerning council compensation for a future meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 7:36 p.m.
