Rothbury council approves routine appointments, 2026 meeting schedule and community updates

At its Dec. 16 meeting, the Rothbury Village Council handled several routine items and community updates.
Council member and Planning Commission Chair Mike Harris asked the council to appoint Stephanie Tallquist as Planning Commission secretary to fill the vacancy left by Carol Witzke's retirement; the council agreed. Harris also moved to approve the proposed 2026 meeting dates for the Village Council (third Tuesdays) and the Planning Commission (second Tuesdays); the motion carried 7-0 and the Clerk will publish the schedule with local newspapers and on the village website.
The council voted 7-0 to authorize the Old Newsies (GoodFellows) to clean the corner of Michigan and Winston for $1,500. Mike Harris moved that the Clerk handle Christmas gifts for Village staff (motion seconded by Jim Fekken); that motion also passed 7-0. A motion to pay the bills was made by Autum Drake and seconded by Mike Harris and carried 7-0.
Recreation Director Brandy Williams reported that the Santa visit turnout this year exceeded the turnout of the prior three years combined. RCC Director and Treasurer Deb Murphy said the Community Center is booked through the end of the year. DPW Director Scott Beishuizen provided an update on snow removal in the village.
Winners of the Village Light Decorating contest were announced: first place Walsworth house, second place Roeseler house, third place Canales house, with honorable mentions to the Lohman and Caniff households; gift cards will be distributed over the Christmas break.
No controversial policy decisions were taken during these items; the meeting proceeded to other business and adjourned at 7:56 p.m.
