Genola adopts updated building and fire codes, adds wildland‑urban interface standards

The Genola Town Council unanimously adopted Ordinance 2026‑04 to update the town’s building, residential and fire codes to the versions currently used by the state and to enter into a cooperative agreement with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands that includes adoption of the wildland‑urban interface (WUI) code.
Josh Nielsen (town staff) summarized the changes, saying the ordinance consolidates prior code updates and adds the WUI standards required when areas are designated as urban‑wildland interface. "The wildland urban interface code is just additional standards that if you are in this area that they consider interfacing between urban area and wildland area ... there’s a whole code building code related to that," Nielsen said, explaining the council will review a proposed WUI map that the fire chief will bring forward.
Nielsen told the council that the town will reference the state’s 2024 code versions and include a provision to automatically incorporate future state updates. Councilmembers asked that the ordinance be passed with authority for staff to correct typographic and formatting errors; the motion passed and staff will file the corrected ordinance.
The WUI map remains to be finalized: Nielsen said the chief will propose a high‑risk WUI map for limited areas of town and that council sign‑off will be required before the designation is finalized.
Outcome: The council voted to adopt Ordinance 2026‑04 and to approve the cooperative agreement with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands; the motion included permission for staff to correct minor typos and formatting before final filing.
