The Romeo Community Schools Board approved a temporary continuation of the Michigan School Meals program (MSM) at its Sept. 22 meeting to keep universal free breakfast and lunch operating while the state budget remains unresolved.
Meeting materials and discussion noted that if the district discontinues participation in MSM it cannot later rejoin if the state resumes the program. To avoid an abrupt change, the board approved a 30-day continuation funded from the district’s food-service fund balance. The temporary measure is intended to preserve universal free meals while the district awaits a state decision and to provide a 30-day window during which parents could submit applications for free or reduced-price meals if MSM funding ends.
The board adopted the CEP — Universal Free Meals Temporary Continuation as Resolution #90 (motion: Boyer; support: Rice). The resolution was recorded in the meeting minutes as passing unanimously (7 Ayes, 0 Nays). Finance committee discussion earlier in the meeting also flagged state funding timing concerns, including that the state-aid payment scheduled for Oct. 20 could be delayed pending the state budget.
