The RSU 18 board approved a request from the town of Sydney to use the James H. Bean School as a polling place on June 9 and agreed to send the school27s students to Camp Tracy for supervised activities that day.
Superintendent staff described an operational plan that would transport and supervise students at Camp Tracy and serve lunch through the district27s food service. Staff noted they are still finalizing costs and logistics but said custodial staff would be present throughout and classrooms would be locked; they also described post‑event sweeps of the building.
Chris moved to approve the plan; Matt seconded. During discussion, one board member said the district27s accommodation for Sydney raised concerns about cost sharing with other towns: "I'm disappointed that the town of Sydney didn't lean forward to recognize the situation of the cost sharing committee for Belgrade and Rome. Maybe they can rethink that in this context. I may vote against this because I'm really angry about cost sharing. I may just abstain," the member said. Despite that comment, other board members supported the plan.
Board members asked whether the town would pay usage fees in future requests; staff said the district will discuss payment policy later but described the June 9 plan as a goodwill accommodation this year to preserve students27 instructional day. Board members also questioned site logistics, including limited parking and ADA access; staff said the state must approve polling locations and layouts.
The motion carried; the board recorded the motion as approved. Staff will finalize cost and logistics with the town clerk and coordinate student field activities at Camp Tracy.
