Madison District board approves 1.2665‑mill levy, bringing non‑homestead rate to 18 mills

The Madison District Board of Education voted unanimously Sept. 23 to adopt a Truth and Taxation resolution and an amended State form L‑429 to levy an additional 1.2665 mills on non‑homestead property, bringing the district non‑homestead operating rate to 18 mills.
Joe Urban, representing Clark Hill and presenting the Truth and Taxation materials, told the board the August ballot authorized an increase of up to 2 mills to cure a Headlee rollback and that the district proposes levying the remaining 1.2665 mills with the December tax levy. "The amount of the rollback that the ballot proposition restored is 1.2665 mills," Urban said during his presentation.
Board members said they received no public comments during the hearing. Mary Bush moved to adopt the Truth and Taxation resolution as presented; Gloria Thompson seconded. A roll‑call vote recorded Crystal Beaver, Mary Bush, Cindy Holder, Mark Kimbell and Gloria Thompson voting yes; the motion passed.
The superintendent and district staff said they filed the district—orm L‑429 earlier to disclose the levies proposed for fiscal year 2024‑25. The amended L‑429 will be submitted to the township treasurer with the district's December tax levy paperwork, as required.
The board completed the Truth and Taxation portion of the meeting before reconvening for the regular agenda. The district public notice announcing the Truth and Taxation hearing was published in a general‑circulation paper serving the Madison School District area, the administration said.
Next steps: the board approved the revised L‑429 in the regular meeting later that evening and staff will submit the form to the township tax authority to enable collection with the winter tax roll.
