County reports 3,355 tires collected at Nov. amnesty day; litter task force outlines 2026 plans

Payne, speaking for the Walker County litter task force, said the Nov. 8 tire amnesty collected 3,100 tires at the county landfill and Rossville recovered 255—3,355 tires total for that event and 33,443 tires across seven events. Task force members said recycling those tires reduced carbon dioxide equivalent emissions and saved the equivalent of tens of thousands of gallons of oil in manufacturing new tires.
The task force reported school outreach with Riesland High, Lafayette High and Gordon Lee, plans to pilot composting in county schools with the Walker County School Board, and an annual county recycling day scheduled for Dec. 30 that will accept paper, plastics (1–7), cardboard and trees (organics only). The group also credited crew efforts at Public Works for removing more than 32.57 tons of roadside waste in 2025 and highlighted a mascot outreach trial at North Lafayette Elementary.
What's next: The task force asked the board to support education and enforcement efforts and said it will report again with updates in 2026.
