Applied-learning partnership with CATA highlights inclusion; unified basketball team to begin Oct. 1
Summary
School committee heard a presentation on an arts-based inclusion program with Community Access Through the Arts (CATA); program goals include confidence, expression and social skills, and the unified basketball team will play its first game Oct. 1.
Monica Zanin introduced Rebecca Cohen, a Substantially Separate classroom teacher at Hoosac Valley High School, and guests from Community Access Through the Arts (CATA), who described a classroom arts program designed to promote inclusion and social skill development for students in substantially separate programs.
Representatives from CATA outlined a typical classroom routine — welcome and goodbye songs that name participants, warm-ups led by volunteers, and an end-of-year showcase where students display their work for caregivers and peers. Program goals presented to the committee included boosting self-confidence, providing new modes of expression, building social skills, and setting and achieving individualized goals by the end of the school year. The committee was invited to attend the year-end showcase once formal invitations are distributed.
Committee members also heard that the district’s unified basketball team will have its first game on Oct. 1 and were encouraged to attend.
