City manager: grant projects near completion; WWTP Phase 1 close to finished, pocket park deadline extended

City Manager Rich Saladin told the Reed City Council on Dec. 8 that several grant-funded projects are nearing completion and outlined next steps for park and wastewater projects.

Saladin said removal of the trestle bridge is underway and will complete Wastewater Treatment Plant Phase 1 work funded in part by a WRI grant, and noted that the headworks building is now in use. He reported that multiple items funded through DWSRF grants are largely complete and that staff will identify additional project proposals to spend remaining grant funds.

The city has secured an MEDC Pocket Park grant agreement extension through April 30, 2026, Saladin said, allowing more time to install synthetic turf once weather permits; a performance pavilion is expected to arrive by mid-January. He also said the city will not install an ice rink this winter because of ongoing projects at park sites.

Saladin reported the Planning Commission approved the Master Plan and a public hearing on the final plan is scheduled for Jan. 5, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. He asked the council for flexibility in adjusting City Hall holiday hours because of staff shortages and previously scheduled vacations.

Council members expressed appreciation for staff and DPW crews handling extra workload and winter operations. Audience member Donna Wheeler thanked the council for support of the Historic Home Walking Tour and provided an update on the Pere Marquette State Trail group. The meeting adjourned at 6:22 p.m.
