Local groups donate more than $130,000 for Reed City downtown park; council clears holiday events and park projects

At its Oct. 13 meeting the Reed City Council accepted major community donations and approved event plans tied to downtown park development and year-end celebrations.
Chris Mund of Crossroads Recreation Connection presented a check for $82,496.69 to the city for the Downtown Park project; the transcript records $50,000 of that amount as a donation from Corwell Health and $32,496.96 from local donations. The council also approved CRC's New Year's Eve Ball Drop plan, which calls for drops at 10 p.m., 11 p.m. and midnight from the RC Feed Building, and granted CRC use of the Depot on New Year's Eve for five years at no cost along with an annual noise-variance extension to 12:30 a.m. for five years. The motion to approve CRC's requests was made by Councilmember Trevor Guiles and seconded by James Anderlohr and carried on a voice vote.
Sally Daling, representing the Reed City Area Rotary, presented a $51,512 gift to go toward a preformed structure at the new Downtown Park. Rotary requested the gift be dedicated to John McDowell with a commemorative plaque; the request was presented to council for consideration as part of accepting the donation.
Donnie Dwyer requested council approval for Festival of the Lights to kick off the Evergreen Festival; council approved CRC running the Festival of Lights as presented. Alex Hough presented an Eagle Scout project proposal to renovate the archway at the west entrance to Rambadt Park, which the council approved. Emily Ruppert summarized the Farmers Market season, saying more than 40 small businesses participated and noting programs that increased access, including EBT, Senior Fresh and Produce Connections.
City Manager Rich Saladin's report noted progress on the MEDC Pocket Park and DDA master plan; the city has planted 45 trees with support from a DTE Tree Grant and the Rotary Club has approved purchase of lights for the 100 block of W Upton that will remain year-round.
The council adjourned at 7:12 p.m.
