Council weighs changes to keeping-chickens ordinance; looks at 50-foot setback and rooster ban

City Manager Ellen Glass presented the Keeping Chickens item on June 9 and asked Council for feedback on potential amendments to the current ordinance.
Councilmember Thomas Hicks proposed several concrete changes: a 50-foot setback from property lines for enclosures, prohibiting roosters, and setting minimum containment and enclosure-size requirements. Council and staff discussed maximum numbers of chickens, egg production and demand, whether the ordinance should explicitly cover ducks, and concerns about coyotes and containment.
Members of the public asked whether ducks were included and raised questions about removal of chicken feces; Councilmember Hicks and staff responded. Glass confirmed the Council's direction was for staff to coordinate with the Zoning Administrator to draft ordinance language that would reflect the Council's preferences, including setback, containment and rooster prohibition. No ordinance amendment votes were taken at the meeting.
