Wacousta students perform; intern presents assessment findings; public urges support for paraeducators

At its April 27 meeting the Grand Ledge Public Schools board heard a student musical performance and a presentation from Wacousta Elementary Principal Allyson Smith on enrollment, assessment results (M-STEP, NWEA, DIBELS), and school improvement goals focused on MTSS, reading, math and belonging. Teachers and students discussed RAMP designation, safety patrol and extracurricular programs; students invited board members to events including Arts Night and Girls on the Run.
Muta Mutashobya, an intern who worked with Superintendent Barnes this year, presented an analysis titled “From Bright Spots to Shared Architecture: What an Inquiry Into Assessment, Instruction and Leadership Reveals About Coherence in Grand Ledge,” summarizing observations from teachers and leaders and answering board questions about next steps for leadership and coherence. Several board members praised the presentations.
During public comment, Robin Moore, the MEA ESP Bill of Rights Captain, asked the board to support measures to ensure fair wages for paraprofessionals; Tim Totten asked about content knowledge areas under consideration for the district’s 7th–8th grade ELA adoption. The board acknowledged comments and proceeded to new business.
