Willacy County extension agent honored; community events and diabetes outreach highlighted

The Willacy County Commissioners Court on June 25 recognized Pela Flores, identified in the record as the county extension health agent with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, for receiving the County Extension Agent Specialty Award for distinguished program achievement.
Flores spoke to the court about local programming the extension office has delivered, including diabetes-education efforts and a recent emergency-preparedness dinner that drew about 125 attendees. "In Willasy County the prevalence for diabetes is at 18%," Flores said, and she explained that the local Healthy Willacy County coalition meets monthly to plan educational programming. Flores thanked the court for its support and said she will travel to Alpine to be formally recognized by the state association.
Separately, Kathy Costa, who identified herself as president of the Port Mansfield Chamber of Commerce, introduced herself to the court and invited commissioners and staff to the Port Mansfield fishing tournament July 23–25 and associated awards dinner on July 25. Costa said she left brochures for the court and public to review.
The court expressed appreciation to Flores and local partners for community outreach and public-health programming. No formal action was required on these recognitions.
