Chair Meg Livingstone told the Council on Aging that a March 10 subcommittee meeting confirmed the town does not require a warrant article to raise the senior tax work-off cap from $1,000 to $1,500 per household, but the board of assessors and the Select Board must approve the change. Deb Lanou is scheduled to meet with the assessors to present the rationale and, if they agree, the COA will seek Select Board approval and amend program paperwork accordingly.
The subcommittee reviewed a job skills form used by Bernardston and Meg circulated that example to board members for consideration in Northfield's materials. Meg said the subcommittee’s next meeting is April 7 at 2 p.m. and is open to anyone who wants to participate.
Board members stressed the procedural steps required: securing the assessors' approval before approaching the Select Board, and updating official paperwork to reflect any new cap if both bodies consent. No formal vote on the cap change occurred at the March 17 meeting; next steps are the presentation to the assessors and subsequent outreach to the Select Board.
