Gadsden council holds first readings on alcohol-license review and downtown parking restrictions

Gadsden — The Gadsden City Council presented two ordinances for first reading on June 23: one to change how alcoholic beverage applications are reviewed, and a second to restrict certain downtown parking areas.
Under the proposed amendment to City Code section 6-45, police department review of alcohol-license applications would be removed and the public hearing notice publication timeline would be shortened from five days to at least four days before the hearing. The change was read for first consideration; council members said the ordinance will be on next week's agenda for a final vote.
A separate ordinance (first reading) would amend City Code section 118-191 to restrict parking at the parking area on First Street and in the parking lot at the police building between Broad Street and Locust Street. Council members asked for clarifications during the meeting about whether the restriction is 24 hours and how police-business parking (for officers responding to or picking up police reports) would be handled; staff indicated the restriction applies 24 hours and that officers conducting police business may park as needed.
Both measures were read into the record for their first reading; neither was adopted at the June 23 session. The council will consider final votes at a subsequent meeting.
