Board approves new athletic director role with safety duties amid public objections over pay and priorities
Summary
The board approved moving the current athletic director's retirement date and hiring Michael McCree as athletic director with safety/security duties (Act 55) at a pro-rated $81,000 salary; members of the public and some trustees questioned whether the safety duties were advertised and whether funds should instead support an art teacher.

The Crestwood board approved human-resources items that included moving the retirement date of the current athletic director and recommending Michael McCree for the athletic-director position, classified as Act 93 with an Act 55 safety and security coordinator duty at a proposed pro-rated salary of $81,000.
A member of the public and several trustees questioned why the salary was increased from a previously discussed figure (cited by one commenter as $69,000) and whether the safety-and-security duties were advertised when the posting was made. "Why would we want to spend that extra money on an athletic director?" a speaker asked. Critics suggested district priorities should include hiring a full-time elementary art teacher rather than increasing the AD salary while other program needs exist.
Administration said the Act 55 safety coordinator assignment is an existing legal requirement that the chief administrator appoints; the superintendent explained that the position carries duties including oversight of school police/resource officers, emergency procedures and trainings, liaison work with law enforcement and reporting to the chief administrator and board. The superintendent also said the district previously had a safety coordinator assigned (a principal) and the change was to expand the safety team rather than eliminate prior coverage.
During the meeting several speakers suggested the job description appeared tailored to the candidate; administration said the vacancy was filled following a posted search with multiple applicants and interviews.
The human-resources package (items 1'9) including the appointment was approved in the human-resources vote recorded later in the session.
The board recorded the hiring action and asked administration to ensure required state reporting for the Act 55 assignment.
