The Cedar Springs City Council on April 10 adopted Resolution 2025-05 to replace the city’s 2005 local agency-specific records retention schedule with the more recent Michigan state retention schedule.
Mrs. Falcon, who presented the proposal, said the city discovered the older schedule while reviewing records and concluded that adopting the state schedule would cut down on digitizing and storage needs. "We called the state, we called our attorneys have reviewed the resolution, got the green light from both of them," she said, describing a two-step approach: revoke the 2005 schedule and adopt the state schedule now, then develop a new local agency-specific schedule to return to council later.
Councilmembers moved and seconded the resolution without extended debate. A roll-call vote was taken; the council recorded assent during the vote and the resolution passed.
The clerk and staff said adopting the state schedule will change what documents may be retained or disposed of under state guidance and reduce the volume of paper the city must digitize immediately. Staff said they will return with a proposed local retention schedule after reviewing city-specific documents.
The council proceeded to other business after the vote.
