Board approves updated secondary and elementary handbooks; policy updates set for second reading

The Fruitport Community Schools Board of Education on July 21 approved updated secondary and elementary student handbooks for the 2025–2026 school year (Item 25‑112).
Tim Burgess reported for the Student Affairs Committee that the committee reviewed first readings of the June 2025 policy updates from Thrun Law Firm and recommended changes to the 2025–26 student handbooks, including updates to the high school appendix. Superintendent Jason J. Kennedy presented the first reading of the Thrun Law Firm policy updates and provided a marked PDF with tracked changes to the board for review.
Item 25‑112, the approval of the updated secondary and elementary handbooks, passed on a motion by Burgess, seconded by Mueller. The motion carried 6‑0; 1 absent. The board scheduled a second reading of the Thrun Law Firm policy updates for the Aug. 18 regular meeting.
The approved handbooks will be the reference for student expectations and procedures for the coming school year; the board did not discuss substantive changes to individual disciplinary policy language at the July meeting.
