Fruitport board approves resolution affirming pay increases for non‑affiliated staff

The Fruitport Community Schools Board of Education voted to approve a resolution (Item 25‑111) affirming pay and compensation increases for named non‑affiliated employees covering the 2023–2024, 2024–2025 and 2025–2026 school years.
Board Secretary Steve Kelly reported the Personnel Committee had reviewed the personnel report and discussed a teacher grievance and the need to consider the superintendent's contract renewal. The resolution states the increases reflected market adjustments and average annual increases comparable to bargaining groups, and includes an attestation that the increases were not paid for the purpose of increasing final average compensation (commonly referred to as "spiking"). The board's intent, the resolution says, is that the listed employees receive full retirement credit for the reported compensation and that the action complies with the Order in Batista.
The resolution named more than three dozen employees, including Brad Faulkner, John Winskas, Mark Mesbergen, Pam Bergey, Brenda Baker and Superintendent Jason Kennedy, among others; the board directed the board secretary to sign the resolution for each named employee.
A roll call vote recorded ayes from Tim Burgess, Dave Hazekamp, Steve Kelly, JB Meeuwenberg, Josh Mueller and Kathy Six; Kris Cole was absent. The motion carried 6‑0; 1 absent.
Board members did not attach additional conditions to the resolution during the July 21 session.
