Superintendent Massey delivers farewell as board confirms internal transition plan

Superintendent Steve Massey used his final board meeting on June 25 to reflect on nine years leading the Forest Lake Public School District and to thank staff, students and the community for their partnership. In prepared remarks, Massey noted academic recoveries since the pandemic and financial strides the district has made.

"Forest Lake Public School District is a premier district," Massey said, summarizing what he described as a decade of gains in student outcomes, graduation rates and program expansion. He told the board he was proud of the districts “high quality instruction and the endless opportunities students have,” and formally noted the communitys support for the 2018 operating referendum that he said underpins the districts finances.

Board members and community commenters used the public-comment period and the superintendent report to pay tribute. Member Tyson said parents and staff frequently told the board that "he really cares," and praised Masseys openness and responsiveness. Member Corcoran described Masseys hiring and leadership as a pivotal moment for the district and thanked him for building strong relationships across schools.

Director JP Jacobson, who the board had introduced earlier in the meeting as director and incoming superintendent, introduced a staff promotion that evening and stood with administrators when Massey delivered his remarks. Jacobson and other leaders were present as Massey urged continued stewardship and attention to the districts strategic goals.

The board did not take any personnel action that night regarding the superintendent role; the meeting focused on farewell remarks, recognition of staff and the administrative transition already under way. Massey closed by thanking his family and colleagues and saying he was humbled to have served the district.
