Summary

At the Feb. 5 meeting the policy committee brought first readings of proposed NEOLA policy updates including volunteer policies in the 3000 and 4000 series and a revised equity policy. Committee members reported they reviewed language to add criminal-history-check requirements for volunteers and recommended notifying parents in packet materials when those policies are finalized.
Committee discussion clarified that volunteers who perform classroom duties (for example March reading or a leadership program) would need a background check processed by school secretaries; board members agreed that when trustees act purely in board functions (committee meetings, walkthroughs) they would not require a volunteer background check, but that trustees who volunteer in classrooms would follow the same procedure as other volunteers.
The committee noted the district chose to retain the 2020 Title IX regulations rather than adopt the 2024 revisions. Separately, the superintendent referenced an NEA special release on federal immigration enforcement in schools and told trustees that the district has protocols grounded in existing policy for how outside agencies will be handled.
Trustees said the committee will next review bylaws and operating procedures (the '0' series) and aim to place finalized volunteer and equity language for a second reading in a future packet; approved policies would be included in parent information materials.
