Oconee County Council advances plan to finance tanker trucks, approves first reading

Oconee County Council gave first reading on Aug. 20 to Ordinance 2024-20, a financing measure to acquire tanker trucks and related equipment in an amount not to exceed $3,380,000.
Councilman Julian Davis III moved to approve Ordinance 2024-20 on first reading; Councilman John Elliott seconded and the motion passed 4–0. During discussion, Elliott asked whether grants could offset the purchase. County Administrator Amanda F. Brock said grants were available, but generally for used equipment or when the recipient can demonstrate need; because the county has funding set aside in its Emergency Services Capital Vehicle and Equipment Replacement Fund, staff determined the county could not demonstrate need to qualify for such grants.
Council recorded no further debate and the ordinance moved forward on first reading.
