Engadine board adopts Policy 5136 limiting student personal-device use in school

The Engadine Consolidated Schools Board of Education adopted Policy 5136 on second reading at its Sept. 17, 2025 regular meeting, restricting most classroom and instructional-time use of personal communication devices.
President Daryl Schroeder moved the measure, which Board member Koerner supported. The policy permits students to use personal communication devices before and after school, during lunch and scheduled brain breaks, and at school-related functions. All other uses are prohibited unless explicitly approved by a teacher or administrator; the policy requires that devices be powered completely off (not merely silenced) and stored out of sight when prohibited.
The motion carried by recorded voice vote. Ayes were Board members Chapman, Hopper, Koerner, Nelson and President Daryl Schroeder; Nays were Board member Moore and Nicole Solar, the board secretary.
Board materials and the administrator reports earlier in the meeting listed a device ban among instructional and operational topics; the adoption on second reading makes the policy part of the board's formal policy manual. The minutes do not specify an effective date beyond adoption on second reading.
The board completed the meeting without further substantive action on the policy; the session adjourned at 6:56 p.m.
