Daryl Schroeder was elected president of the Engadine Consolidated Schools Board of Education at the board’s regular meeting on Jan. 15, 2025. The board completed its reorganization, approved routine administrative items and later entered a closed session to discuss the results of a Title IX investigation.
The board appointed Andrew Alvesteffer as temporary chair earlier in the reorganization process. A motion by Dave Hopper, supported by Koerner, nominated Schroeder as president and was carried. An initial nomination by Gregory Moore to name Marjorie Nelson vice president failed (Aye: Gregory Moore; Nays: Leslie Chapman, Dave Hopper, Koerner, Marjorie Nelson, Daryl Schroeder). The board then nominated and elected Leslie Chapman as vice president on a motion by Hopper supported by Koerner; that motion carried unanimously. Nicole Solar was elected secretary and Marjorie Nelson was elected treasurer; both motions carried.
As part of routine financial housekeeping, the board named First National Bank of St. Ignace–Naubinway as the depository for the general fund, lunch fund and debt fund; it named Tahquamenon Area Credit Union as the depository for the activity fund and MILAF for general fund investments. The board authorized Superintendent Andrew Alvesteffer to invest excess funds at the highest available rate.
The board approved a motion authorizing Superintendent Alvesteffer to sign all checks, with Daryl Schroeder (board president) and Marjorie Nelson (board treasurer) designated as back-up signers. Sharon French (superintendent secretary) and Kristie Anderson (EUPISD) were authorized access to school accounts.
On a motion by Leslie Chapman, supported by Koerner, the board set its regular monthly meetings for the third Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in Engadine. The board also designated the St. Ignace News as the official newspaper for registration, election, budget hearing and Truth in Lending notices; other notices will appear in The Advisor and/or Newberry News. Committee assignments were approved as presented.
During reports, K–12 Administrator and instructional coach Mrs. Luoto summarized instructional activity and assessments, citing probationary teacher PLCs, mid-year observations, high robotics participation and upcoming NWEA testing; she also noted proposed changes to the school phone-usage policy. Superintendent/7–12 Principal Andrew Alvesteffer reported that the district is seeking teachers for sixth grade and a 7–12 resource position, referenced MESSA-related benefit changes and a new bond, and reminded the board of semester-end and school vacation dates.
The board approved a motion to enter closed session at 7:35 p.m. to discuss the Title IX investigation results; the motion was supported by Gregory Moore and carried. The board returned to open session at 9:13 p.m.; the minutes record no public details from the closed session. The meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
Minutes for the meeting were signed by Nicole Solar, secretary.
