The Galesburg City Council hired Jennifer McVeigh as an administrative assistant to support City Clerk Lisa McNees, approving the hire by a 5–1 roll-call vote on Sept. 8.
The Personnel Committee interviewed McVeigh and recommended offering the position at $17.50 an hour for 20–30 hours per week. Clerk Lisa McNees told the council she had checked McVeigh’s references and said the references “would hire her again,” describing McVeigh as detail oriented, punctual and positive. Councilmember Ryan Harnden moved to approve the hire; the vote was five in favor and one opposed (Councilmember Glen Hawes).
Council members said the new hire should help with routine office duties, including processing invoices and maintaining the cemetery database, and free up other staff time for code enforcement. McVeigh will need state-provided election training if assigned election duties; Clerk McNees said that training is available at no cost.
The council did not elaborate on a start date; the vote authorizes the hire and wage as presented. Mayor Linda Marble pointed to the lengthy hiring process, noting several earlier applicants accepted other jobs while the committee completed its reviews. The council approved the hire by roll call; the motion carried 5–1.
