Galesburg council presses owner of 89 E. Battle Creek over code violations; city reports $9,125 owed under court order

Mayor Linda Marble reported the city has paid nearly $4,000 in attorney fees related to code enforcement at 89 E. Battle Creek and said a court order from July 2024 requires the owner to pay $25 per day until conditions are fixed. Marble said that beginning Aug. 15, 2024, the owner owed about $9,125; the city had received no payments.
Councilmember Anthony Tipken said the property appears unchanged and urged cleanup or face demolition; Hawes said he would speak directly with the building official. The owner disputed some claims, saying the building official told him certain piles were acceptable; Wortinger offered to meet the owner at the property.
Clerk Lisa McNees said the Building Official would contact the owner the following day. Councilmembers warned that continued inaction could lead to the city demolishing the structure and placing the cost on the owner’s tax bill if the legal process requires it. No demolition order was issued at the meeting; staff will pursue the enforcement steps outlined in prior court orders.
