Dowagiac Union Schools honor students across district at board meeting

Kelly Millan, principal at Dowagiac Union High School, introduced the high-school student of the month, saying it was “my honor to present” the honoree and describing the student’s academic involvement and community-minded activities. Dr. Whitman introduced the middle-school student of the month and praised his participation in robotics and classroom leadership. Principals from Patrick Hamilton, Kincho, Sister Lakes and Justice Gaug elementary schools presented their respective students of the month and outlined classroom nominations, extracurricular involvement and reasons each child was chosen.
The student representative earlier in the meeting recapped community and school events including parent-teacher conferences, after-school math tutoring, Homecoming 2024 activities, a college fair and the fall play, and highlighted athletic accomplishments including girls golf and cross-country placements.
Why it matters: the recognitions provided a public record of district celebrations and allowed administrators to highlight student success, extracurricular participation and community engagement ahead of upcoming conferences and programming.
The meeting recessed briefly for photographs before moving on to informational and business items.
